The Covington family contributed much to the growth of post-Civil War industrialization of the south. The ten children of Terrell and Eranda Covington took advantage of opportunities to maximize their industrious nature. From the huge southern business of turpentine distillation, to naval stores, mercantile business and banking, the Covingtons were an entrepreneurial lot. They became business leaders and health professionals flourishing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The intermingling of the huge Bass, Capel, Chappell and Covington families spread throughout the south from a solid footing in Anson and Richmond County, North Carolina. Ancestral roots are traced back to the late 1400s. Photographs, charts, and family trees abound in this massive genealogy. Many interesting anecdotes relate to the beginning of the Coca-Cola Company, the Winn-Dixie Company, multiple Southern bank beginnings, and even how a baggage mix-up at the train station led to the marriage of M. E. Covington and M. E. Covington. Anyone who has survived a current-day hurricane with the warnings before landfall and assistance after the fact, will be astounded at Hamp Covington's series of letters to his fiancé, describing the impact of the 1899 Pensacola, Florida hurricane with no advance warning, and the resourcefulness of friends and neighbors in the aftermath. Amazing photographs are included. A different day; a different time. William Covington's work shows the immense intricacies of family.
